Read a sample: Chapter 12

We all have numerous financial foes that can pop up in our lives like weeds. You can read a magazine, watch a commercial, or have a conversation and poof — you have just gained a few more financial foes. These financial foes are more commonly referred to as our desires.

Desires by themselves are not bad. A few good foes can bring out the best in us, the same way a strong opponent can raise the level of a competition. But if we have too many foes at once, they become overwhelming. We must keep our desires in check so they do not overrun our position. A budget does exactly that.

The Battle Plan Budget is a MUST for victory. In war, if you want to hold any position you must fortify it properly. The same rule applies to your money.

Remember: we ALWAYS pay ourselves FIRST.

Monthly Income = 100% – Savings (Pay Yourself) = 12–15%

After you have paid yourself, the next priority is debt. I can hear you now: “I’ll pay that later.” Well, this is later. No person can fully respect themselves if they do not repay what they owe. Write your debts down from smallest to largest and attack them in that order. As you pay off the small ones, take the money you were paying on them and roll it onto the next debt. That is the snowball in action.

Monthly Income after savings = 85% – Debt (Self-Respect) = 20% of original income, if debt exists

If you have no debt, that is a strong position. Continue using the Percentage Principle as written. If you do have debt, stick to these guidelines and they will pay off — literally. Once the debt is gone, redirect that 20% into higher savings and investments. We are building wealth by paying ourselves first and refusing to let old obligations keep us in a defensive posture forever.

A man with no written budget is a man fighting blind. The Battle Plan Budget is how you stop fighting blind and start choosing the engagements.
